Approved scales

Approved scales are indispensable tools for managing the sale of bulk food, both for weighing and for determining the final sales price of each individual purchase.

    Approved scales are professional commercial scales that, in addition to weighing food, calculate the final sales price and print out the sales receipt for the sale.

    These professional scales automatically calculate the weight of the product and, thanks to the calculation function, multiply it by the base price identified by the seller. This ensures the final sales price for the buyer to pay.

    Other functions of this scale are:

    • fixed price setting;
    • storage of base prices for up to 100 prices;
    • receipt printing;
    • daily sales report.
    • cash register function.

    The scale pan is made of stainless steel and can be cleaned daily or after each use with a damp cloth.

    In professional scales, each model has a different maximum weight, up to a maximum of 300 kg. In some models there is also a weight tower with a visible price for the customer.

    Approved scales: what they are used for

    The approved scale is the only scale recognised by law for commercial use, i.e. for the sale of products. Every professional scale that wishes to receive type approval must therefore be registered with the Chamber of Commerce, which issues the authorisation stamp for use.

    When is the use of approved scales mandatory?

    Type-approved scales are mandatory for commercial activities where the weight of the product determines the price change.

    What has changed compared to the recent past?

    Decree No. 93 of 21 April 2017 shed light on the use and approval of commercial scales, making important changes compared to previous rules. These changes include:

    • elimination of the obligation to affix the first verification stamp with the expiry date;
    • moving the first expiry date to three years after commissioning, with receipt of the 'green' mark for the successful verification;
    • obligation for the manufacturer to provide the customer with the type approval certificate together with the scale and metrological booklet
    • ;
    • notification to the Chamber of Commerce of the commissioning of the scale within 30 days of receipt of the scale
    • .
